Angel Talk
Light as a feather,ââ said the archangel. âThatâs what Raquelâs grandfather said. Could it be that you had a part in that?â
âI walked behind him, with my hands under his arms to steady him,â said the little angel. âHe was easier to control than Raquelâs father. He didnât seem to mind my pushing him, or even give it a second thought.â
âDescribe Raquelâs grandfather to me,â said the archangel.
âYou know what heâs like as well as I do,â said the Little Angel of Happiness. âHeâs patient and easygoing andââ
âDescribe him physically.â
âWell, heâs old and just a little bit overweight and not real strong and pretty tall, even though he kind of stoops, so itâs hard to see how tall.â
âThatâs right.â The Archangel of Happiness put a finger in the center of the little angelâs chest. âDo you think itâs safe for him to climb stairs, even if youâre behind him, giving a little support?â
âI guess not.â The little angel got a quick shiver of panic at the image of Raquelâs grandfather missing a step and tumbling down the stairs. âOh, no. What a risk I took. And now he has to go back down. Iâd better go help him fast before he tries those stairs on his own. Oh no oh no oh no.â
âShhh, now.â The archangel pulled the little angel to him and hugged him. âThis is the kind of problem you can fix, so why be unhappy?â
The little angel looked up at the archangel. âHe really is big, and I really am not.â
âWeâll do it together, one of us on either side of him.â The Archangel of Happinessâs voice held all the strength that the little angel needed.
âThank you.â The little angel grabbed the archangel by the hand. âCome on.â
âAnd, by the way, congratulations,â the archangel said, loping along.
âFor what?â
âYou got Raquel not to back out on that trade. Grandpaâs presence was exactly what she needed to carry through.â
The little angel would have laughed if he werenât so worried about Grandpa. âThatâs not why I brought Grandpa upstairs. I didnât know Raquel was going to try to back out. All I wanted was to make sure that Raquel was fair about the trade, that she had a generous spirit, like we talked about.â
âLet me get this straight,â said the archangel. âRaquel knew that Sarah wasnât perfectly happy, and she certainly didnât want that baby doll. So she traded entirely out of good feelingsâentirely because she wanted Sarah to be happy.â The archangel squeezed the little angelâs hand. âYesterday I donât think Raquel cared all that much about other peopleâs happiness. But today she does. Sheâs definitely making progress. And you are behind it, whether by design or not. Keep it up.â
The little angel squeezed back on the archangelâs hand, but he didnât feel settled at all. How could he keep it up when it seemed nothing was within his control?
